New Delhi: Eyes are one of the six sense organs in our body which are responsible for sight. Not just really important, eyes are also an extremely sensitive organ and need to be protected and cared for very cautiously. While we have the eyelashes and eyebrows as natural barriers to anything that may enter our eyes, externally also, we need to take proper care of them.

Problems like cataract, myopia, hypermetropia and other eye-related diseases are not very uncommon and therefore there are certain things we should take care of – like eating healthy to improve vision, keeping any sharp objects away from eyes, etc. However, there are certain myths that surround the care of eyes and need to be busted, so you can not only take care of them better but also know what doesn’t work so your efforts are not wasted. Myth: Carrots are the best food to improve eyesight.

Fact: Though good for the eyes, carrots may not be the best food for them. Green leafy vegetables and other foods rich in antioxidants, are even better for your eye health and may also help in avoiding and delaying problems like cataract.

Myth: Low light will affect your vision.

Fact: Low light does not affect your vision or eye health, but all it does is tire your eyes quickly and that is why light that shines directly on the reading material is considered healthiest and the best for reading.

Fact: The above statement is a myth as this does not happen due to the light of the screen. Staring at the screen can cause you to blink less often, which can lead to tired and weary eyes, too soon. It can cause blurred vision and similar problems but the problems are not because of the screen, but because of not blinking enough and not giving your eyes proper lubrication. Myth: Taking a break from your glasses or contact lenses is healthy for your eyes.

Fact: If your doctor has asked you to wear glasses while reading or for far sights, you should wear them. Not wearing them will only make your eyes tired and may cause a headache or pain in the eyes. It is not proven to deteriorate your vision, though.

Myth: Doing eye exercises will delay your vision loss and need for glasses.

Fact: Vision depends on the shape of your eyeball, the health of your eye tissues and has little or almost nothing to do with eye exercises. Eye exercises can avoid fatigue and trouble caused due to stress on the eyes or tiredness, but has nothing to do with the delay in vision impairment.
